‘Out and about days’ will be informal, small group discussions with the local community such as Headteachers or mother/toddler groups and will take place across the five towns of the Borough. Please email email@example.com to be a part of our future community engagement days.
5 March, 2018
Our chair Jonathan Carr-West and Panel member David Johnston first met with Chris Evans who is the Chief Officer of the Basildon Billericay and Wickford CVS (Council for Voluntary Service). They also went to Willows Primary School to meet with Sean Tobin who is a Headteacher in the Borough. He is also a founding member of the Basildon Excellence Panel and is currently the Executive Trustee of the Basildon Education Partnership. Both meetings went well and it gave the panel the chance to hear from our local community. This will be fed back to the ‘Place’ theme meeting on Friday 16 March.

The panel first met with Salim Wali from the South Essex Islamic Group. He told the panel about some of the problems his community group faces, particularly in relation to the lack of space available for Muslims to practice their faith. The panel then met with the Billericay/Basildon Street Pastors to hear about some of the excellent community work they do. However, they also spoke about the need for a space in the town centre. Finally, the panel met with the headteacher of St. Teresa’s Catholic Primary School, Nuala Cashell. She spoke about some of the issues she’s experienced during her time as a headteacher in Basildon and she said that young people are getting into trouble due to the lack of activities available after school.
Overall the panel had some good conversations and there is plenty to think about going forward. The panel will use all of the information from these sessions in their future work.
